Why I Started Behind The Chic
The mission of Behind The Chic is simple: to unite with other creatives through a form of writing that fosters a deeper understanding of why we do what we do and how we create. I want to draw people inward and help them reconnect with their true selves. Storytelling is one of our earliest forms of expression and connection in the community. Just as art leaves a mark on history, storytelling through writing allows us to step into someone else's world and add our own context to the story through shared experiences or commonality.
It all started with my journaling. I have always had a journal since childhood. It's one of my favorite ways to decompress, share my thoughts on my day, and reflect later for reference. I would have a pile of journal books by now if I kept writing consistently in my good ol’ composition book. I decided to reframe my work journaling into a blog because I want to give people a little glimpse into my world as a hairstylist, makeup artist, mother, and wife. Sharing an authentic version of myself and my life experience that could help another beauty entrepreneur on their journey, because it was a lot of us sharing our trials and testimonies to showboat all the wins, which seems elusive and unauthentic to me.
As I grew in my career and stepped into motherhood, I began craving a deeper kind of conversation. A conversation that was rich with details and emotions. I started journaling on Tumblr (boy, was that app a crazy fun place to be). At first, I was sharing behind-the-scenes content and photoshoot work, but that wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to share my world. I wanted to be more personable, like I am when I have a client sitting in my chair, talking to me, and we instantly connect.
Some of the most transformative conversations I’ve ever had happened with a client in my chair—raw, unrehearsed, and full of truth. My clients tell me all the time how much they love our talks. We cover everything from motherhood and business to spirituality and pop culture, and somehow it always flows. There have been so many moments where we’ve lost track of time—they’re still sitting there, well past their appointment, just vibing, talking, laughing, or even crying. It became a running joke that they didn’t want to leave.
After a while, client after client kept saying the same thing: “You need to start a podcast,” or “You should be writing this stuff down.” That’s when it really clicked for me—these conversations weren’t just casual; they were healing. They were the kind of moments that deserved a bigger space. And that’s a big part of how Behind The Chic took shape.
I wanted to create that type of connection online. So, as we relaunched Behind The Chic, I was convinced to add a section titled “CEO Mom Diaries” to include another element of intentional authenticity that I know a lot of people would find relatable. I started our relaunch off with a series called “What I Wish I Knew Before…”. This series is sharing stories of growth and advice I wish I had received as a young beauty entrepreneur. It’s filled with wise tales, avoidable mistakes, crazy challenges I’ve faced, and my solutions that have built the talent people see today. I’m also a woman who is well-versed in conversation, so I’m not stopping at giving advice and sharing funny salon stories. I will also be covering social/cultural topics, spirituality, lifestyle, as well as beauty and fashion.
Behind The Chic isn’t just about looking good— it’s about going deeper within. It‘s a space to explore the beauty, breakdowns, and breakthroughs behind the polished image and beauty brand. Being “Chic” doesn’t just mean high-level fashion; it also means chic thinking, chic healing, chic parenting, and chic resilience. To me, that’s the highest form of chic.
I created Behind The Chic for every woman who’s ever asked, “Am I the only one going through this?” And the answer is, “You’re not.” Whether you’re building a brand that you’ve always dreamed of, raising babies in this crazy world, healing from your past, or simply trying to make space for yourself in a world that demands so much—this blog is for you. Let’s grow, heal, learn and laugh through it together.
